The reception decor and the restaurant food/wines.

The corridors in the location I was staying smelled musty and unpleasant - I had to do shallow breaths. The staff weren’t particularly warm and friendly, just efficient. The restaurant was part of the main pub with no available bar area that, with the main restaurant only open for breakfast. Whilst the reception decor area was beautiful, this didn’t extend to the location I was staying in which was more tired. I won’t stay at this hotel again, despite the convenient location.

The location is perfect for the Barbican centre and it isn’t far from Shoreditch either. It’s very clean and the staff are extremely helpful. Our room wasn’t ready when we entered the room (cleaner was in the middle of cleaning) so we went back to reception and they gave us a different room. They offered us 2 hours of complimentary drinks in their lounge to make up for the confusion which was very kind (although we couldn’t make it as we had plans) but the thought was there!!

The lady at reception was super friendly and helpful. Also the club room was a good size with plenty of space and comfortable bed. Location was central to the nearest station and easy to find.

The room seemed a little disjointed with an old leather sofa bed that appeared broken and no chair for the desk, much more could've been made of this space. Also the bathroom needed some attention with the sink tap coming off in my hand and signs of wear and tear, but thankfully there was a secondary bathroom I could use. The floor to ceiling curtains were dusty and coming off the rail on the end. And finally breakfast although offered complimentary at the club lounge was a total farce, no table space, no staff and no food on the 2 days I stayed.

The hotel staff are great, the receptionist kindly accommodated my room request and was super helpful. The room is comfortable and a great City location for business.

There are some parts of the hotel that need a little cosmetic upgrading, the shower for instance. But everything was clean and very comfortable, so just a minor point really.

I asked the front desk to send someone up to my room to turn on the towel heater in my room. This never happened! Also the lobby and the breakfast area were extremely cold!

Stayed in a club room which was a good size and comfortable for London standards. Bathroom was also a good size and room had fridge, kettle, hairdryer, all the key things I needed. History of the building is very cool and location is spot on for Liverpool St and Moorgate offices, also for Barbican and Finsbury square. Nice and quiet on 4th floor. Reception staff were lovely although their systems like key cards were playing up.

A few things need attention, I would question the 5 star rating but also it was a very reasonable price more like a 4 star so thought good value for money.

Four minutes from the Barbican, so perfect for seeing a show there. Good food at Cote nearby. Interesting history of the building, paintings and sketches in the walls illustrating its past, fabric of the building still intact, whole street appears to be well conserved and cherished. Comfortable bed. Relaxing lighting. Lovely fluffy towels and good toiletries. All staff friendly, warm, helpful and efficient.

Room was advertised as sound proofed which is why I chose over nearby Barbican Rooms. However those authentic sash windows, gorgeous though they are, without secondary glazing offer little soundproofing. Also in my first floor room they rattled when buses, motorcycles and construction traffic passed underneath (frequently). I found a good use for the complimentary slippers: wedged them where the window panes cross, and this stopped the rattling (see photos). The generous curtains stopped most of the draught. Was sorry there was no hotel bar or mini bar but nice to have a fridge and there’s a mini Waitrose nearby. Bath was very nice, had to stand in it to turn the tap on!

The hotel did not have my reservation logged and despite showing them my booking.com reservation it took over 20 minutes to sort out
